Highland Mountain Bike Park, America’s Bike Park is gearing up for another exceptional season, opening its doors to season pass holders on Thursday May 3rdand to everyone else on Friday May 4th. Season Pass holders will get first tracks on Highland’s newest work of art, Bonesaw, a hand crafted dirt rollercoaster that is the mastermind of Highland’s trail crew. “Bonesaw is our most recent offering catering to the advanced riders who demand a more challenging trail,” explains Trail Crew Manager, Tom Lepesqueur. “Meshing the old school, hand built style and wood features with a machine built structure and tons of flow, the trail will keep you on your toes and laughing the whole way down. Bonesaw delivers.”

Bridge through tree

Step down

In true Highland fashion, new trails are not the only new thing on the docket this season- Highland continues their dedication to building the most progressive park in the country with the addition of a 50’ x 50’ Bag Jump to their already extensive Highland Training Center. The “Ayr Bag” will find its home at the base of the world famous Claymore Challenge Course. “The Ayr Bag just makes sense,” says Red Bull/Cannondale pro rider Aaron Chase, who was instrumental in making the Ayr Bag a reality. “Red Bull and Highland partnering was just the next natural step. Both companies are dedicated to progression and taking the sport to the next level for both the pro athletes and the riders next in line. Raise a Red Bull to these guys.”

Ayr Bag

Once again for 2012- Highland has jam-packed their event and camp calendar with the old favorites and some new exciting events!

Some key events include:

The 5th Annual Claymore Challenge- July 20th-22nd- A Gold level stop on the FMB World Tour the Claymore is arguably a favorite stop of the pro tour. Watch the top pros throw down for over $20,000 in cash on the Dave Smutok designed course! Who will take in victorious dip in McCaul’s pond and walk away as the newest “knight” of HMBP?

Battle Of Hellion- August 26th- Back for it’s second year, the Battle of Hellion takes the endurance of racing with the fun of freeride as racers accelerate down Highland’s signature jump trail, Hellion.

Cannondale OverMountain Enduro Challenge- October 20th- In 2011 Highland worked with Enduro pro racer Mark Weir to design this challenging and fun race where riders are faced with a number of climbs and fast speed, glade style downhills in this 3 stage race to compete for over $10,000 in cash! Open to all levels and abilities!

S’ender Bash- November 17th- What other way to say good bye to an amazing season- then throw a HUGE party and Highland Mountain can throw a party like none other! In 2011 the lodge transformed into a fraternity, Animal House style- one can only wonder what 2012 will bring!

With only days to go before the lift is spinning, the Highland crew is working in full force, grooming trails, stocking shelves and waiting for the first riders of the season. Season Passes and camps are on sale- so what are you waiting for? Come visit America’s Bike Park, Highland Mountain Bike Park.

The park is located just 90 minutes north of Boston in beautiful Northfield, New Hampshire. Boasting an extensive downhill and cross country trail network, skill building areas, a 9,100 square foot indoor training facility and NEW for 2012, another step in progression, a 50’ x 50’ “Ayr Bag”. Highland offers lessons and camps for all abilities and is home to the Ayr Academy, a week long, overnight camp taught by the best celebrity pros in the business. Highland Mountain Bike Park is America’s Bike Park…100%.

What is an OverMountain Enduro Race at Highland Mountain? This question has caused many sleepless nights trying to develop a gravity enduro race that best utilizes the various terrain we can offer. With the help of Cannondale’s professional athletes sharing their enduro race experience around the world and the Highland trail crew’s knowledge of the topography we have refined a format and course to more accurately depict what an OverMountain Enduro Race at Highland is.

Format

The race will be made up of 3 timed “Specials” which will be added into one combined time. Athletes will have start times for each Special and once a Special is complete riders will have a extended time limit to make their way to the next stage.

1st Special: Start at the top of the mountain and head down ODB to Threshold. Come down a new section of trail through the base area and into our XC loop.
Estimated 1st Special time is 6-7min.

After 1st Special you will have a short break to allow yourself to make your way to the 2nd Special.

2nd Special: You will continue on the XC loop.
Estimated 2nd Special time is 5-6min.

On completion of 2nd Special riders will have to ride the XC trail up to Easy Rider and continue to Highland’s summit for the 3rd Special.

*Climber’s Prime* Cash Bonus

Riders who want to race to the summit can continue racing through the finish of the 2nd Special and to the summit. The fastest rider from the start of 2nd Special to the summit will win the climber’s prime.

3rd Special: You will start at the summit and race down a new section of trail/glade linking pieces of existing trails to the bottom finish.
Estimated 3rd Special time 4-5min.

All Specials must be completed using the same bike.

Results will be based on the 3 Special’s times combined.

The USA Cycling Pro Gravity Mountain Bike Tour (Pro GRT) resumed with the Highland Bike Park race in Northfield, N.H., on May 14-15.

The men’s race was dominated by Trek World Racing as Neko Mulally (Reading, Pa.), Aaron Gwin (Temecula, Calif.) and Justin Leov represented it in the first three positions. Curtis Keene(Fremont, Calif./Specialized-SRAM) placed fourth, ahead of Cody Warren (Alpine, Calif./DRD X-Fusion Intense Factory Team).

After qualifying in dry, sunny conditions, rain on Sunday changed the course to slick and muddy terrain. Mulally bolted down the hill 2.5 seconds faster than Gwin. Leov finished just over one second behind Gwin and 2.3 seconds ahead of Keene, who narrowly edged Warren at the finish line.

After his win at Highland Mountain Bike Park, Mulally has tied Danny Hart (Giant Factory Off Road Team) for the top spot in the 2011 Men’s Individual Pro GRT standings. Richie Rude, Jr. (Golden, Colo./Yeti Cycles) is in third place ahead of Gwin (Temecula, Calif./Trek World Racing) and Andrew Neethling (Giant Factory Off Road Team), who are tied for fourth.

On the women’s side, Jill Kintner (Ferndale, Wash./Transition Racing), who has won both Pro GRT races so far, was the only woman to finish in less than three minutes. Kintner completed the course 10 seconds ahead of Joanna Petterson (Specialized). Petterson, herself, had a 10-second cushion on third-place finisher Lauren Daney (Stafford, Va./Specialized Grom). Vaea Verbeek (Intense Cycles) crossed the finish line six seconds behind Daney and 13 seconds in front of Cierra Smith (Reno, Nev./Specialized AllRide Academy).

After her win at Highland Park, Kintner has an 80-point lead over Petterson and Miller in the 2011 Women’s Individual Pro GRT standings. Mary Moncorge (Santa Cruz Alliance) is in fourth place, two points ahead of Daney.
